Churches across the city can open their doors again to worshipers from May 10th.
Campaigners in Galway City, on the impulse of the Roundtower Association, have been rallying in front of the Galway Cathedral every Wednesday evening and Sunday afternoon since St. Stephen’s Day calling on the Bishop of Galway to permit public worship.
“It is unfortunate that the Bishop of Galway, Kilmacduagh and Kilfenora, Most Rev. Brendan Kelly (along with every other bishop in the country) has complied completely with the government’s efforts to suppress public worship. This is despite the fact that the Catholic Church herself teaches that it is the duty of the Church, not the State, to care for the spiritual welfare of the faithful,” said the Roundtower Association.

The Roundtower Association raised the point that some shops in the city were open to customers but places of worship had to remain closed. Taoiseach Micheál Martin has announced tonight the imminent reopening of religious services with a maximum of 50 people.
“Our government has not given any proof that the ban on public worship is proportionate to the current health situation”, said a statement.
The association said it does not oppose to any health measures to protect the health of the most vulnerable and was not calling on anyone to do something “reckless”.
The news comes as a growing number of Catholics throughout Ireland were taking to praying outside their parish churches.
